Old vs new tax regime

The new tax regime is the default. It has lower slab rates, but most deductions, including ELSS, PPF, life insurance premiums and health insurance premiums, are not available under it. The old regime keeps those deductions. Which one leaves you with less tax depends on your income and how many deductions you actually use. Salaried taxpayers can choose afresh every year.

ELSS: the tax-saving mutual fund

An Equity Linked Savings Scheme is an equity mutual fund that qualifies for the old-regime deduction for investments, within the overall annual limit shared with PPF, EPF and life insurance premiums. It has the shortest lock-in among these options at three years, and each SIP instalment is locked in separately. ELSS returns are market-linked and not guaranteed.

Harvesting long-term capital gains

Long-term gains on equity mutual funds are tax-free up to ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year. By redeeming and reinvesting units to book gains within that limit each year, you raise your purchase cost and reduce future tax. Check exit loads and ELSS lock-ins before redeeming.

A note on section numbers

The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the Income-tax Act, 1961 from 1 April 2026 and renumbered many provisions. We still use familiar names like "80C" and "80D" because most investors know them. Please confirm the current section and limits with your tax adviser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I invest in ELSS if I use the new tax regime?

Yes. ELSS is still a diversified equity fund, but you will not get a tax deduction for it under the new regime. The three-year lock-in still applies.

How does the ELSS lock-in work for SIPs?

Each SIP instalment is locked in for three years from its own purchase date. For example, units bought in March 2027 can be redeemed from March 2030.

What is tax-gain harvesting?

It means selling equity fund units to book long-term gains up to the yearly tax-free limit of ₹1.25 lakh, then reinvesting. Your purchase price goes up, so less of your future gain is taxable.

Is ELSS better than PPF?

They serve different needs. PPF is government-backed with a rate set by the government and a 15-year term. ELSS is market-linked, can be more volatile, and has a three-year lock-in. The right mix depends on your risk appetite and time horizon.

Do you file income-tax returns?

No. We are a mutual fund distributor, not a tax consultant. We handle the investment side and can share capital-gains statements with your chartered accountant.
