Go to CalculatorsHow goal-based planning works
- List your goals and dates. Examples include retirement at 60, a child's college in 2038 or a home down-payment in five years.
- Estimate the future cost. We inflate today's cost to the year you need the money.
- Work out the monthly SIP. This is the amount that, at a reasonable assumed return, reaches the target. You can try this yourself with our calculators.
- Match the fund category to the time horizon. Longer goals can carry more equity, and shorter ones need more stability.
- Review every year. As a goal gets closer, money is usually moved gradually from equity into debt so a market fall just before the deadline does less damage.
Matching funds to time horizons
For goals under three years away, investors commonly use liquid or short-duration debt funds, where capital stability matters most. For goals three to five years away, hybrid or conservative allocations balance growth and stability. For goals more than five years away, equity funds have historically had enough time to ride out market cycles, though returns are never guaranteed.
Why inflation changes everything
At 8% annual inflation, a course that costs ₹10 lakh today will cost about ₹21.6 lakh in ten years. Planning with today's price is the most common reason families fall short, so every target we set is inflation-adjusted.
One goal, one portfolio
We keep separate SIPs or folios for each goal. That way you can see at a glance whether the retirement money is on track, and nobody dips into the education fund for a holiday.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many goals can I plan for at once?
As many as you can realistically fund. We usually prioritise them, with emergency fund and insurance first, then near-term goals, then retirement. Each goal gets its own SIP so progress is easy to track.
What happens if I fall behind my target?
We review the gap and look at your options: increase the SIP, add a yearly step-up, extend the timeline or adjust the goal amount. Catching a shortfall early makes it much easier to close.
What is a step-up SIP?
A step-up (or top-up) SIP automatically raises your monthly instalment each year by a fixed amount or percentage, usually in line with salary increments. Small annual increases make a large difference over long periods.
Should I stop my SIPs when markets fall?
When markets fall, each SIP instalment buys more units. Stopping during a fall means missing those lower prices. Whether to continue should depend on your goal and timeline, not on short-term market moves.
How often should my goals be reviewed?
At least once a year, and also after major life events such as marriage, a child's birth, a job change or a large inheritance.
